Al. Panagoulis square, Alimos

Rescue excavations carried out by the 26th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in Panagoulis Square in Trachones of Alimos in 2008 identified part of a cemetery of the ancient municipality of Evonymos which was in use from the late 8th to the 5th century B.C. The cemetery is located at the northeastern end of the Municipality of Alimos near the ancient urban road, which had the course of Vouliagmeni Avenue. West of the cemetery of Panagouli Square lies the central part of Geroulanos’ estate, where undisturbed secondary deposits of cremated bones with or without urns had been excavated.

A total of 44 burial constructions were excavated, including 31 dug-out pits for pyres, 10 pit graves and 3 cist graves. The graves extending on the west side of the excavation site, pits for pyres and inhumations, date to the Late Geometric period. The Late Geometric tombs of the Panagoulis Square cemetery included 6 primary cremations, 5 inhumations in pit graves and 2 in cist graves. The orientation of the pyre pits was east-west or north-south, while their depth ranged from -2,80 to 3 m. Most of them were equipped with air ducts on the floor. Burnt human remains were found along with vessels or conjoining sherds.
