Palaio Gynaikokastro Kilkis

In the 1980̕  the ΙΣΤ΄ Greek Archaeological service conducted excavations at the site of Palaio Gynaikokastro in northern Greece. The archaeological site consists of a cemetery dated to the 4th century A.D. and an early Iron Age burial tumulus. Both inhumations and cremations have been excavated in the tumulus with the latter to outnumber the first. A total of 542 urns have been excavated. The urns were placed in a vertical position on the ground inside built “thikai” made of upright stones and they were enclosed by stones. Grave goods, mostly vessels, were mainly deposited outside and more rarely inside the urns. A representative sample of the burnt remains will be studied as part of the TEFRA research project.
